Gasoline and diesel vehicles represent 34% of Calgary's total emissions. Providing reliable and efficient alternative transportation options, like walking and cycling, is a key way of reducing these emissions.

What is Calgary's 5A Network

Calgary's 5A Network stands for Always Available for All Ages & Abilities, and represents the pathway and bikeway network that connects across Calgary. The 5A Network seeks to build year-round routes for transportation that are guided by 5 principles:

  1. Separate people by their speed

  2. Improve visibility

  3. Make it reliable

  4. Be accessible for everyone

  5. Make it easy to use

Prioritizing Active Transportation

Ahead of Calgary's 2025 municipal election, Calgary Climate Hub is focusing on community and policy initiatives to advance active transportation in Calgary:

  • Calgary Rides: Pathways and bikeways are for everyone! Calgary Rides hopes to showcases the stories and experiences of Calgary's pathway users and the joy of accessible and affordable transportation.
    • Are you interested in sharing your story about cycling and walking as climate action? Email [email protected] to chat!
  • Mid-Cycle Budget Review: Investing in cycling and pathway infrastructure is a tangible climate action that municipalities can take towards emissions reduction. The mid-cycle budget provides an opportunity for Calgarians to voice why active transportation is not just important, but necessary for Calgary to reach their climate goals.
