Campaign Goal:
By August 2025 the draft (or final version) of the renewed South Saskatchewan Regional Plan (SSRP) includes language and targets to protect and restore the headwaters region of Calgary. The renewed version should specifically include amendments that takes cumulative impacts into consideration and prioritises ecological integrity and address human-spatial disturbances in the East Kananaskis and Ghost planning sub regions.

The CCH will also encourage the City of Calgary to make a formal submission to the renewal of the SSRP. The City of Calgary’s submission to the SSRP includes comments on the protection of the headwaters regions, alignment with the City’s climate strategy and prioritises climate mitigation and resilience.

Campaign Rationale:

The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan (SSRP) is the guiding document for all land use on crown land in the eastern slopes. Currently, completing land disturbances have resulted in significant degradation of the ecological and climate resilience of this landscape. The renewal of this plan in 2025 represents an important opportunity for the CCH to comment on land use and management in the headwaters region of the city of Calgary.

Partnership opportunities exist with organizations like Save our Slopes, Bow River Bioregional Regeneration Network, Take a Stand for Kananaskis (TASK) and Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society Southern Alberta (CPAWS).

This campaign is a continuation of efforts made in 2024 as part of the Kananaskis Logging Slowdown campaign.
