Advancing renewables across Calgary

The global energy transition towards affordable and reliable clean electricity is happening across Canada and right here in Calgary.

As ENMAX phases out its energy generation assets to focus exclusively on transmission and line hardening, the Calgary Climate Hub looks to renew our campaign to focus on three key approaches:

● Capital Project: We are exploring a potential capital project, in partnership with Bow Valley Green Energy Cooperative, which would help create a seed fund for communities to collectively implement and own their own renewable energy projects. This project will directly advance community owned renewables in Calgary, while serving as an example of the collective benefits of renewables in all communities.

● Policy Engagements: We are working to identify policy interventions that will help advance the renewable sector in Calgary and lower existing barriers to community generation.

● Cultural Engagements: We seek to strengthen community understandings and acceptance of renewable energy projects by focusing on the long-term material and economic benefits for both producers and consumers, like community-owned energy.

What is community-owned renewable energy?

Community-owned renewable energy describes the local ownership of renewable energy projects including: solar PV, solar thermal, wind, biomass, geothermal, and micro-hydro systems.

Community ownership helps people take an active role in their communities, building local governance and leadership, and creates economic and social stability. Importantly, it helps facilitate an understanding of renewable energy projects and eases community reluctancy to the energy transition.

Coalition For Responsible Energy

We are very proud to be acting as a lead organizer in the Coalition For Responsible Energy (C4RE). This coalition is made up of landowners, scientists, surface rights advocates, Indigenous, environmental, human health and civil society organizations, working to reform the Alberta Energy Regulator, with specific focus on the underfunded orphaned well levy.
