Access to affordable and appropriate housing is a climate solution
As millions of people across Canada, and right here in Calgary, are faced with rising costs of living and affordable housing shortages, there is a greater and clearer connection between housing and climate. Calgary needs more homes that are affordable, resilient against worsening weather events, and energy efficient to meet climate goals.
Energy-Efficient Homes
Housing affordability is not only a matter of supply. It is estimated that 20% of Canadians experience energy poverty due to the disproportionate cost of heating their homes compared to their incomes (Pembina Institute). Lower-income households are especially vulnerable to extreme temperatures with less access to affordable cooling and heat. Climate resiliency must be built into the design and construction of new builds, while older homes must be retrofitted to align with climate goals and support community wellbeing.
