Campaign Goal:
By August 2025, ensure that the Calgary Climate Strategy is appropriately aligned and implemented within Local Area Plans and/or Municipal Development Plans to ensure safe, secure, energy-efficient, and affordable housing for all Calgarians.
Campaign Rationale:
Suburban sprawl and housing are significant drivers of climate change in Calgary. Safe, secure, and affordable housing is a key component for adapting to, and mitigating, climate change. A Local Area Plan (LAP) and Municipal Development Plan (MDP) identify and guide where and how future growth and change should happen within a specific area, and thus provide key opportunities for impacting municipal housing policy for social, economic and climate outcomes. The next local area planning projects will launch in 2025, and a decision on which plans will be made will be decided at the end of Q3 2024.
Numerous organisations serve as potential allies on this file, such as More Neighbours YYC, Calgarians for Sustainable Growth, ACORN Alberta, Task Force for Housing and Climate, and the Calgary Alliance for the Common Good.
