The goal of this campaign:

By August 2024, achieve a resolution at Calgary City Council to institute a maximum indoor temperature in rental units in Calgary of 26C, as accomplished in other cities.

Become a volunteer today to join this campaign!

Rationale:

As Calgary warms, we are likely to face increasingly severe heat waves. Climate justice means working towards protecting the most vulnerable as we address the climate crisis. Renters generally have less control over the condition and amenities of their dwellings compared to homeowners, leaving them more vulnerable to extreme heat.

Other cities, such as Hamilton and Toronto have passed bylaws to protect renters from heat waves by mandating a maximum indoor temperature in rental units. While this will likely increase use of air conditioning, and therefore electricity use, this should be portrayed as an opportunity to electrify heating by installing heat pumps instead of simple air conditioners.
