Congratulations to our
2024 Youth Climate Bursary recipients
For the second year running, the Calgary Climate Hub has awarded bursaries to members of the youth climate movement who are either attending a post-secondary school in Calgary or who have graduated from a Calgary high school and are attending post-secondary education elsewhere.
After reviewing the wide range of applicants, our committee is proud to announce the following three students as the recipients of a 2024 Youth Climate Bursary.
Chloe C
Masters of Public Policy, University of Calgary
Chloe has been involved with Sustainable Calgary for many years. Her passion for urbanism served her greatly in her role working on the Connaught Open Street project, which has converted a dangerous intersection beside a Calgary school into an enjoyable corridor for biking, walking and playing.
An avid urban cyclist, Chloe frequently attends Critical Mass YYC group ride events. Chloe is studying her Masters of Public Policy at UCalgary with the goal of working to further climate-progressive policies in Calgary.
Muhammad F
Engineering, University of Calgary
Muhammad has been passionate about climate action and sustainability from a young age. While serving as president of his high school Eco-Club, Muhammad championed a range of sustainability projects ranging from tree planting activities, recycling programs, and student education events on sustainability practices.
During his time at UCalgary, Muhammad has joined the Environmental Engineering Club and participated in a range of projects, including design and construction of a rainwater harvesting system to irrigate the University's green spaces. He has volunteered with several local climate organizations, and is continuing to develop his skills in environmental science and sustainability while continuing his studies in Engineering at UCalgary.
Sasha A (she/her)
Political Science, University of Toronto
Sasha began her climate activism journey by joining Alberta Youth Leaders for Environmental Education in her Junior High years. After participating in this group, including contributing to a white paper for the Alberta government and consulting on education reform, her activities were interrupted by the COVID years.
However, despite this setback, Sasha sought out alternatives to continue her fight for climate action, leading her to join Fridays for Future Calgary. Sasha took part in organizing rallies and protests on a range of climate and social justice issues, in addition to volunteering in a series of municipal and provincial election campaigns. Sasha is currently studying Political Science at the University of Toronto.
On behalf of the Board, staff and bursary committee of the Calgary Climate Hub, we congratulate Chloe, Muhammad and Sasha on receiving our Youth Climate Bursary for 2024 and we look forward to receiving more inspiring applications in 2025.
