Solar Power for the People!
The renewable revolution is upon us, and solar powered electricity is one of the cheapest, most efficient, and cleanest global energy sources today, yet not everyone has access to it. Rooftop solar is unavailable, or may be too expensive for many people, particularly renters and condo owners, preventing citizens from benefiting from associated cost savings and increased energy security. This campaign aims to address this void by introducing plug-in solar to Alberta (also known as balcony solar).
What is Plug-In Solar?
Plug-in solar is a small photovoltaic solar panel (or panels), on the order of 1200 Watts, that can be placed on a small open space such as a balcony, shed, or deck. The panel is connected to a micro-inverter (to produce AC current) and then to a plug which can be inserted into a standard wall outlet. The power provided by the panel offsets up to 10-25% of electricity use, increasing energy security and reducing electricity bills.
Is Plug-In Solar Available Today?
Plug-in solar is popular in Europe (over 4 million users), South Korea, and is being introduced to a number of states in the US. It is not available in Canada. This is due to regulations requiring permits, grid connection fees, and electrician installation intended for rooftop and commercial arrays. Additionally, Canada requires updated safety certification codes. These regulations and certifications have been effectively addressed in other countries.
Our Campaign
You have the right to produce your own energy and lower your cost of living!
-
Advocate for provincial micro-generator regulations to remove the need for plug-in solar to have permits, connection fees, or electrician installation.
-
Advocate for a national safety certification for plug-in solar units (e.g. UL3700/CSA)
-
Work with partners to enable practical demonstrations and establish a supply chain for units.
-
Coordinate with other plug-in campaigns, both provincial and national.
