Transforming Calgary Through Nature-Based Initiatives

Shovels in the Ground offers community members the tools, resources, and expertise necessary to implement Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) projects in their local neighbourhoods.

What are Nature-Based Solutions?

Nature-based solutions describe a range of collective actions that work to support the functioning and sustainability of natural ecosystems, improving human wellbeing, and strengthening biodiversity. This includes the protection, restoration, and management of natural ecosystems within and outside of cities. Examples include:

  • Pollinator and rain gardens;
  • Urban food forests;
  • Sustainable stormwater management;
  • Green roofs and architecture;
  • And more!
