Volunteers Needed
Mini Forest Stewardship Day - July 2024

When: Saturday July 13th, 8 am - 11:30 am (revised time due to heat)
Where: Calgary Centre for Spiritual Living, 4411 Manitoba Road SE

Volunteer green thumbs, one of our recently planted Mini-Forests is in need of some TLC and we need you.

We need volunteers to assist our Forests for Calgary team to put up a temporary fence to protect the Calgary Centre for Spiritual Living Mini Forest (planted Sept 2023) from hares and other animals. We will also be covering the berm at the base of the forest with solarizing material and mulch (for weed control).

More importantly, we will have fun while doing it! This will be a great opportunity for volunteers to meet their fellow Hubsters and get their hands dirty taking care of one of Calgary's newest mini-forests!

Tasks will include:

• putting up fence posts around the forest (~200 m2)
• unrolling wire and attaching it to the fence posts
• bending out the bottom of the wire and burying with soil (this task involves moving soil with shovels and wheelbarrows)
• unrolling solarization material over the berm and covering it with several inches of bark mulch (this task involves moving bark mulch with shovels and wheelbarrows)

NOTE: As pictured above, the forest is planted on a slope, so the work will involve walking and moving material up & down the slope. Safety information will be sent out to all volunteers ahead of time and safety training will be provided at the event.
