The Calgary Climate Hub is proud to be a co-signer of a letter to the Prime Minister, calling for immediate passing on strong oil and gas methane regulations.
Methane is a harmful pollutant with more than 80 times more global warming potential than carbon dioxide, accelerating the climate crisis that threatens the safety and stability of our community.
We, along with 20 other organizations, urge for the reduction of methane emissions and emphasize that the implementation of these regulations are crucial to ensure the health and well-being of our communities.
The impact of methane emissions from oil and gas operations, along with the release of toxic chemicals, is linked to many serious health effects. This puts communities at risk and prevents schools from providing a safe learning environment.
Methane emissions and flaring contribute to:
- Ground-level ozone and particulate pollution
- Increase in poor air quality
- Increasing rates of asthma attacks, and respiratory and cardiovascular issues
- Adverse birth outcomes when exposed to during pregnancy
The health risks are particularly concerning for children as they are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of air pollution. We strongly believe that every child deserves to grow and learn in a safe and healthy environment, free from toxic pollutants.
The government has introduced draft regulations to reduce 75% of oil and gas methane amount from emission levels in 2012 by 2030. We applaud this action, and we call for immediate finalization and implementation of these regulations.
