Celebrating a Tree Equity Campaign Win!

Three years ago, the Calgary Climate Hub delivered a presentation on Tree Equity to during a public hearing at Calgary City Council. We presented research provided by Nature Canada and included local examples of communities in the North East with a dismal tree canopy.

This presentation, alongside numerous advocacy efforts with Councillors and administration, resulted in Ward 5 Councillor Raj Dhaliwal pushing for more tree planting in his ward and ultimately submitting a Notice of Motion (NOM) to council entitled, “Advancing Tree Equity Through The Two Billion Trees Program.”

This week, Calgary Urban Forestry released its report for the NOM and recommended identifying and prioritizing underserved neighbourhoods using a tree equity criteria and focusing public tree planting efforts in those areas. This marks an important development in

We are so proud to celebrate this win with our Tree Equity Campaign, made up of community advocates and neighbours committed to growing a better Calgary where green space and trees are abundant for all communities, not just a select few.

We are fortunate and grateful for all the support provided by Nature Canada, and we are looking forward to continuing to advocate for equitable planting and stewardship in Calgary!

“This is such a great example of the power of advocacy. Amazing work Calgary Climate Hub! So amazing!! We are so grateful to have been able to support and be a part of this big win. Time to celebrate this victory!"
